NYC ELOPEMENTS
HOW TO GET MARRIED IN NEW YORK CITY
You can plan your own New York City elopement—or ask for help navigating the details. Either way, it begins with understanding the official marriage process, choosing the kind of ceremony you want and giving yourself enough time to enjoy the city.
Champagne Weddings NYC helps couples explore New York elopements, prepare for government requirements and discuss concierge coordination. You remain responsible for applying for your marriage license and attending required appointments; no private service can approve a license or guarantee an available City Clerk appointment.
Start with the kind of wedding you want. A City Clerk civil ceremony is simple and official. A private ceremony can offer more flexibility in location, format and personal vows, but it requires a legally eligible officiant and any applicable registration. Remember that your marriage license and ceremony are distinct steps.
Both people must participate in the marriage-license process. NYC's City Clerk offers scheduled in-person or eligible virtual appointments through Project Cupid; walk-in licensing is not offered. An online application provides a confirmation number, but completing that initial form alone does not issue the license.
OFFICIAL APPLICATION & APPOINTMENTS — NYC PROJECT CUPID
Bring valid identification accepted by the City Clerk, payment and any required records relating to previous marriages. Check the current official requirements before traveling, particularly if you have a prior marriage, a name discrepancy or documents issued outside the United States. Expired identification is not accepted.
In general, a New York marriage ceremony must take place at least 24 hours after the marriage license is issued. A court-issued judicial waiver may allow a shorter interval in qualifying circumstances; do not plan on receiving one automatically. Most licenses are valid for 60 days, so plan your trip and ceremony within the applicable window.
You can arrange a civil marriage ceremony with the City Clerk or a separate ceremony with a legally authorized officiant. A City Clerk ceremony requires a scheduled appointment and at least one witness age 18 or older. For a private NYC ceremony, verify the officiant's eligibility and any required City Clerk registration before making commitments.
After a private ceremony, the couple, officiant and required witness or witnesses sign the license, and the officiant is responsible for returning it as directed. At a City Clerk ceremony, the marriage registration certificate is generally issued that day; after a private ceremony, registration processing and mailing take additional time.

OFFICIAL NYC CIVIL-CEREMONY GUIDANCE
Choose this for a straightforward civil ceremony at an NYC Marriage Bureau office. You'll need a valid marriage license, your booked ceremony appointment, required IDs, an adult witness and the applicable ceremony fee. It's still possible to celebrate afterward with photographs, dinner, a neighborhood walk or a longer New York weekend.
Choose this if you'd like to personalize your location, wording and experience. Arrange a legally authorized officiant, appropriate location permissions and a realistic schedule. Some public settings have their own rules for gatherings or photography. A private ceremony is not necessarily an alternative to the marriage-license process—you still need the license.
Use the official NYC resources to apply for your license, schedule appointments, check documentation and arrange the ceremony. Decide what experience you want beyond the formal process, then allow enough time for traffic, transit, photographs and celebrations. Planning independently is entirely possible, and the City's official information is the authority on requirements.
Want a second set of eyes on the details? Champagne Weddings NYC is developing concierge planning for couples who would value assistance organizing their timeline, preparing questions, understanding the sequence of official steps and coordinating possible wedding-day logistics. Any individualized assistance, delivery scope, fee and availability must be agreed before a paid engagement begins.
